The Rookie Sniper from Michael Shaw on Vimeo.
Now that we have learned how to use the cameras, I wanted to experiment with creating a production with multiple camera angles, and multiple cameras that reflects my topic. I also wanted to experiment more with silhouetted characters who are still identifiable when not in profile, as well as depth of field. (did it work?)
I was inspired by the moral of The Wolf In Sheep's Clothing to make this short animation. It states "harm seek, harm find," meaning that the pain one searches to inflict becomes the very pain that is done onto oneself.
We have plenty of rooftop assassins in our time. Eventually, one of them will get a little too bloodthirsty and fall from the building they are on. The desire to kill undetected can consume an individual, as it did the wolf, and the sniper in my video.
I love the humor you put into every project you do. I have to say that the camera movement in the "Boy that Cried Wolf" video was much more dynamic than this one. It still flows perfectly with your aesthetic, and I'm not sure it using a camera in a more dynamic way would interrupt that style.
ReplyDeleteSo we killing people now? Is that what we do Mike? I get what you are trying to do but I think you could of put him on a further building and have the camera really zoom towards the character. Steal from Wanted.
ReplyDeleteI think this a good illustration of event broken by different shots which are effective and make sense. The only thing I could recommend is your other projects have had a greater mood expressed through color scheme. I feel this one is a little lacking compared to our others. This setting is simpler and therefore I think should be played up with a little more theatric color themes.
ReplyDeleteI think the really happy guy in this could move a little more at some point or show a giggle. I just keep expecting him to show life. Good Illustrations and Texture in the piece. And i'm not sure if this is even long enough to do, could you have the clouds move? Again it may not be long enough for that. Good job tho!
ReplyDeleteyour shots are very nice and the animation is superb. the humor is lovely as always. i kind of want to see this piece extended. it could maybe go further. like maybe you can have your sniper in more than one scenario. maybe think of it like wiley coyote and roadrunner. maybe he keeps stalking this one person and keeps falling to his doom. you could even do the wiley coyote fall that would give you an extra camera angle and would end with a puff of dust in the ground. it just seems to me that you're going for physical comedy and maybe you should go farther with that.
ReplyDeleteGreat aesthetically, I like the more ambiguous figures. I had to read your comment to understand what story you were adapting. It makes sense now that I have read. If you really want to convey that story, I would suggest having the sniper appear harmless at some point. We never see him in "sheep's clothing". The texture is much more understated in this one, I think I liked it to be heavier. Perhaps it is lighter because its daytime and your others have been night scenes. Excellent use of varying angles and really taking and leading me through the scene.
